Beauty Nova

Beauty Nova is a minor Pokémon character that can be battled in Pokémon X & Y. Nova says that, just a half year ago, she was a Black Belt (or a Karate King in the Japanese version), a trainer type that’s exclusively male, in contrast to her “Beauty” trainer type, which is exclusively female. While her dialogue in the English version is somewhat censored, she says in the Japanese version “the power of medical science is amazing, wouldn’t you say?!”, alluding to her medical transition!! : D

Character Game Gender Unknown Non-human

Mangle

So I’m mostly putting this on here cause I think it’s funny, but Mangle from the Five Nights at Freddy’s series has repeatedly conflicting information on their gender, in a way signaling that she may be omnigender, bigender, or something along those lines. Mangle’s pronouns are entirely different between different mentions of the character in game, with she, he, and they all being used for the character. This is likely because Mangle, as his name hints at, is a mangled conglomeration of different dismantled animatronics, which all probably have different genders. Scott Cawthon, the creator of FNaF himself, has added to the confusion with a post he made on Steam, in one of the funniest ways he possibly could, by saying that their gender is “Yes”. Mangle first appears in FNaF 2, and has been a staple of the games since then.

More Info:

Other Names/Versions: Funtime Foxy, Phantom Mangle, Nightmare Mangle, Magician Mangle, Serpent Mangle

Pronouns/Gender: Pronouns are unknown but inconsistent between different mentions of the character, gender is unconfirmed

Media Appearances: Minor antagonist (FNaF 2, FNaF 3, FNaF 4 Halloween Edition, FnaF: Help Wanted, FNaF World, FNaF: Special Delivery, FNaF: Ultimate Custom Night, FNaF: Pizzeria Simulator), minor antagonist in several official FNaF novels and graphic novels

Story (Spoilers I guess?):

Mangle first appears in FNaF 2, as a hostile animatronic that begins in the Kid’s Cove area and slowly creeps towards the player character’s office. Mangle is described as an old animatronic that has become a take-apart-and-put-back-together toy for the young children that play at the FNaF 2 restaurant. When Mangle is present in a room, a modified static sound effect can be heard when the room is viewed through a camera.

In FNaF 3, Mangle does not appear in any physical form, rather appearing as a Phantom Animatronic, a hallucination that hinders the player’s survival, but does not directly kill them. A similar sound to Mangle’s static effect, this time much louder, can be heard when Phantom Mangle is near. Mangle becomes hostile towards the player when the player views them for too long on the cameras, producing their static noise, which both makes the other animatronics more aggressive and disables the office’s audio and ventilation systems.

Mangle appears as a nightmarish version of their FNaF 2 design in FNaF 4, in a non-canon appearance in the Halloween Edition of the title, and functions similarly in gameplay to Nightmare Foxy.

FNaF: Sister Location, which is theorized to take place before the other games, introduced Funtime Foxy, which appears to be Mangle before their fate in FNaF 2.

Mangle appears in FNaF: Special Delivery as Magician Mangle and Serpent Mangle. Mangle’s original FNaF 2 iteration also appears in FNaF World, FNaF: Help Wanted, and FNaF: Ultimate Custom Night. Phantom Mangle also appears in FNaF World, FNaF: Help Wanted, and FNaF: Ultimate Custom Night. Nightmare Mangle also appears in FNaF: Ultimate Custom Night. Funtime Foxy also appears in FNaF World, FNaF: Help Wanted, and FNaF: Ultimate Custom Night.

Notes:

Some people might be annoyed that I put Mangle here since I’m mostly just adding it as a joke, but there’s a valid argument that Mangle’s genderqueer, so I’m posting this on the page 🙂

Glass Beach

Link to their website: http://glassbeach.band/

Description:

Glass Beach is an indie rock band with inspiration from all over the place and an energy that’s absolutely electric. They have several songs about the genderqueer experience, which come off as being very personal, as three out of the four members are nonbinary! They have only one album to date, accurately titled “the first glass beach album”, which was released just recently in 2019, and re-released in 2020.

Albums: “the first glass beach album” (2019), “Alchemist Rats Beg Bashful” (2021)

Singles: “1015” (2020), “running” (2020), “classic j dies and million streams on spotify” (2020), “beach life in death” (2021), and “welcome to the black parade” (2021, cover of song by My Chemical Romance)

Members:

  • J McClendon: Glass Beach’s main vocalist, songwriter, producer, and mixing engineer, who also plays keyboard and guitar! They’ve been making music their whole life, and started recording it at age 13. They performed with several other bands and created several solo albums under the name “Casio Dad”. J’s is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns.
  • William White: William is currently the drummer for Glass Beach, and also produces and plays a variation of other instruments for other music groups. William met Jonas, who would later be Glass Beach’s bassist, and moved to LA in 2016, where they moved in with Jonas and their roommate, and Jonas’s roommate, J. Together, they created Glass Beach, which would be William’s first time drumming for a band. William uses they/them pronouns.
  • Jonas Newhouse: Jonas is the bassist for Glass Beach, and also works on theatre productions and streams tabletop RPG games on Twitch. Before being in Glass Beach, Jonas released several solo albums in their teenage years under the name Zed, and started the band 8-bit Johnson with William when they met them in college.
  • Layne Smith: Layne plays several instruments for Glass Beach, after joining the band in 2020, a couple years after it was formed by J, Jonas, and William in 2016. Layne has worked with several other groups, being a pianist, bassist, and “pseudo-drummer”. Layne has a degree in audio engineering, and now does some freelance audio engineering, studio recording and mixing, post-production, and has created some solo music as well.

More information on them can be found on their website, linked above, please give it a look to

Notes

  • J also has a solo album, all clumped into one video, posted on the Glass Beach YouTube, titled “jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj”. It consists of alot of little songs, mostly instrumental and chiptune, that J made by themself during the 2020 quarantine, just to keep them busy. The album definitely has that “losing my mind of boredom in 2020” kind of energy!
  • This is my favorite band ever!! Their vibe is so funky and energetic and every song they have is such a banger!!! The lyrics is their songs are so impactful to me, and the way they use their music to sing about the transgender experience is so so cool and special!!!!! –Sylvie

yoshi’s island by glass beach

The First Glass Beach Album: Amazon.de: CDs & Vinyl

yoshi’s island represents the transfem community by detailing a trans girl’s relationship with her parent, society, and a third party who is also transgender. This is a transfem anthem with lyrics that can hit extremely hard for any trans person, like “I won’t say she even though I know you want me to, I know that it’s hard but I swear I still love you”. It encapsulates how it feels to be trans in such an amazing and accurate way, with a bouncy, energetic vibe that sounds and feels like the joy that comes with learning who you are.

Full song lyrics:

One, two, three, four
One, two, three, four

One, two, three, four
Five, six, seven, eight

I can’t take the pressure
Yeah, everybody thinks that you just need to grow up
I know it’s hard, it’s fucking impossible
tryna make sense of the things that you feel now

With spiro and estro from Vanuatu
What the hell do you think that’ll do to you?
I won’t say “she” even though I know you want me to
I know that it’s hard but I swear I still love you

I can’t take the pressure
Cry on the bathroom floor when you look in the mirror
Cover your neck or they’ll cut your head off
J, you’re only cute with your heart eyes and legs crossed

Write the things you think when you’re out of your body
Run yourself out of words to say you’re hopelessly lonely
And don’t leave the city and don’t leave the covers too
I know it’s hard but I swear I still love you

I am never gonna understand
I am never gonna understand
I am everything you think about her
Behind her back, the whole truth
Does it hurt to say you love her like a son?
The world could kill her just cause she can’t fit in right

Yeah, they’ll make it so dangerous
When they leave no room to breathe in the space they carved out for us
When the get inside your head, give you white lies and black eyes
When they try to change your shape until your sense of self dies

But you make me feel like I’m out of my body
We ran out of words to say we’re hopelessly lonely
So don’t leave the city, please don’t leave the covers too
Just stay right here babe, let’s live life like lovers do

I am never gonna understand
I am never gonna understand
I am everything you think about her
Behind her back, the whole truth
Does it hurt to say you care about your son?
The world could kill her just cause she can’t fit in right

You take spiro and estro from Vanuatu
You say you won’t think about nothing but loving you
We’re sleeping harbor seals on the seaside of Malibu
Okay, I won’t think about nothing but loving you

Spiro and estro from Vanuatu
You say you won’t think about nothing but loving you
We’re sleeping harbor seals on the seaside of Malibu
Okay, I won’t think about nothing but loving you

Analysis*

This song seems to have a perspective shift halfway through, shifting from the perspective of J’s mother/father/relative, who doesn’t support their identity, and their lover, who is likely also genderqueer.

The first part of the song reads exactly like something an unsupportive parent of a trans person might say. “I can’t take the pressure, yeah, everybody thinks that you just need to grow up” (making it about themself, saying that it’s stressful for them, the parent), “I know it’s hard, it’s fucking impossible, tryna make sense of the things that you feel now” (as if they’re saying ‘you don’t know what you’re talking about, you’re not trans you’re just confused’), “Write the things you think when you’re out of your body, run yourself out of words to say you’re hopelessly lonely” (don’t talk about it, just write about it in a journal), “I won’t say she, even though I know you want me to, I know that it’s hard, but I swear I still love you” (I don’t support your identity, but I still love you, I swear), the lyrics all paint a clear picture of J and the singer’s relationship. The lyrics of the second half of the song, however, have an entirely different tone, being more supportive, and using “us” at times when singing about trans issues. With lyrics like “Just stay right here, babe, let’s live life like lovers do”, it’s pretty clear that this half of the song  is from the perspective of J’s lover and their relationship with J. The song ends with “Okay, I won’t think about nothing but loving you”, to represent J accepting that, okay, we may both be in constant danger from society, but at least we have eachother.

*This is just how I’m interpreting the song, to the best of my ability and in the way that I think makes the most sense, alot of it’s pretty straightforward and I’m very confident my analysis is correct.

Sidenotes:

  • A demo version of this song exists, titled “yoshi’s island things”. This version is very different, with some chunks of the song not even making it into it’s later version, but is just as amazing as it’s counterpart, with some lyrics that hit hard in ways the other doesn’t.
  • This song has connections to “bedroom community”, “glass beach and blood rivers,” “cold weather”, “classic j dies and goes to hell”, “dallas”, “(rat castle)” and “soft!!!!!!”, some of glass beach’s other songs, which, together, tell a beautiful story with complex character relationships and themes. bedroom community details the relationship between a trans girl’s relationship with her father, and has similar themes to “yoshi’s island”.
    • For example, bedroom community’s lyrics “she writes emo songs, she so depressed, her lyrics are naive, but she still sings here heart out, the only way she knows how to confess” could connect to yoshi’s island’s “write the things you think when you’re out of your body, run yourself out of words to say you’re hopelessly lonely”. Because of the lyrics about the father’s attitude towards his daughter’s identity, it seems that the first half of yoshi’s island is not sung by him, as the tone and attitude is somewhat different, with more religious themes and a harsher attitude. yoshi’s island can connect to glass beach and blood rivers as the relationship between the two transgender characters in the two songs seems to be similar, and it seems that the narrator of the second half of yoshi’s island may be the same as the narrator from glass beach and blood rivers, as the words they say and the sort of vibe to what they’re saying feels similar.
    • The lyrics in bedroom community “Melancholia can spread like a virus, I know you got it from that stupid girl” may reference J’s friend/lover, as there’s no other specific girl mentioned in the song. This verse sticks out like a sore thumb, as the mention of some girl doesn’t mesh with any of the themes or lyrics in the rest of the song, but through a later connection to this song in cold weather, this being a reference to J’s friend can only make sense. bedroom community is a song where we learn that J spends alot of time in an online group, the “bedroom community” where they feel like they can truly be themself, and in “cold weather”, we get the lyrics “I love the way you make me feel when I’m staring at my screen, at four A.M., trying not to fall asleep”, which is reminiscent of this bedroom community. Also in cold weather, we learn that J developed feelings for their friend, during this period where they were communicating online, with the verse “I wanna say I think it’s OK if we just don’t both feel the same way, but I feel like we’re more than just friends”, and this leads to the relationship we see between the two in yoshi’s island.
    • However, from the lyrics and themes in soft!!!!!!, we find that J’s mental health was spiraling, with their gender dysphoria becoming cripplingly intense, and, as J sings, “I know, know what you’re thinking, it seems like I just can’t stop making everything about myself”, implying that J’s spiral was bringing their friend down as well, leading to strain on their relationship. (rat castle), which seems to be part of the story as the term “rate castle” referenced in “dallas”, consists of only the verses “These days I don’t know what to do” and then “these days I don’t know what to do with you”, repeated twice, which I believe to be the internal thought of J’s friend, not sure what to do about J’s rapidly spiraling mental health. dallas shows us what J’s friend decided to do, driving out of town, to start a new life anywhere else, driven away by J’s issues and the lack of support from their own parents. As they drive away, the friend reminisces about the way that their circumstances made them feel small, and how J pushed them away.
    • We see that these two had lost touch for quite some time in glass beach and blood rivers, which I believe to be J’s bestie telling J what happened after a long time of disconnection between them. cold weather tells us explicitly that there was at least a six month period of time where they were out of touch, and tells us that it took this entire six months for J’s friend to realize “I didn’t miss the cold weather, I just missed you”. classic j dies and goes to hell, with the same idea conceptually as cold weather but from the perspective of J rather than their friend, centers around J attempting to make a life for themself without their friend, finding a decent job, moving into an apartment they know they’ll never own, and having trouble sleeping, filled with guilt over how things turned out. The title of this song is also how we know that J is the one left behind, and their friend was the one that ran away, as it includes J’s name.
    • glass beach and blood rivers seems to be the last song chronologically, and is from the perspective of J’s friend, explaining what happened when they left, and promising J that they’ll never leave again, while finding J at the bottom of a downward spiral and sitting with them through a panic attack. J’s friend is back for good, admitting their feelings, in lyrics “so please listen clearly, I love you dearly” and “I love you, okay?”, and promising that they will always be here for J. They propose that they should “forget about the places that we should be”, and run away together. This is where the story ends, and I can only hope that they did, and lived happily ever after, together. 🙂

Personal sidenote: This is my favorite song of all time!!!!!! It hits really hard for me and it’s relatable to me because of my relationships with my mom and grandparents, and WOAH yeah some of these lyrics rock me to my core, like “I won’t say she even though I know you want me to, I know that it’s hard but I swear I still love you”, WOAHHHHHHHH THATS ROUGH –Sylvie <3

Character Mental Illness Show Transmasc

Viktor Hargreeves

Viktor comes out as transmasc in Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy. It fits into his character arc very well, and all his siblings have different, but all kind and supportive, ways of reacting to his coming out. This was written into the script to support Viktor’s actor, Elliot Paige, who came out as transmasc between the releases of seasons 2 and 3!

Viktor has a long character arc, starting in the very first episodes of the show, centering on his journey of self discovery. He struggles with mental illness and overcoming his self-worth issues, and through the events of the show, slowly finds out who he is. Because of this, him coming out as transmasc fits seamlessly into his overarching character development. Viktor at the start of the show is soft-spoken and insecure, but as he finds himself, he becomes more confident, becoming in later seasons one of the most outspoken characters among the Hargreeves siblings. Viktor loves his siblings, and develops an especially strong relationship with Allison through the events of the show. Viktor is skilled at the violin, and is the most powerful Hargreeves sibling, with the power to manipulate sound and energy in a number of massively destructive ways.

More info:

  • Other Names: Number Seven, The White Violin
  • Pronouns/Gender: He/Him, transmasc
  • Media Appearances: Netflix show, major character (based on a character from a comic series by Gerard Way, the comic book version of the character isn’t listed here as she is not trans)

Story (SPOILERS!!)

Viktor was one of the children born on October 1st of 1989 in a strange event where 43 women, who were not pregnant before that moment, suddenly gave birth. Eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopted them soon after, along with 6 other children born in this event. At the Hargreeves mansion in an unnamed city, Reginald raised Viktor, originally under the name “Vanya”, and was raised alongside his siblings, Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number 5, and Ben. Also each assigned a number, with Viktor being Number 7, the Hargreeves children were raised akin to experiments, with Reginald trying to form them into a sort of ragtag superhero team.

The practices Reginald used to train them, however, were incredibly abusive. When Reginald discovered early on that Viktor had powers that were, he believed, too powerful to be controlled, he began to give him pills to suppress his powers and memories of their powers. For his entire childhood from then on, he was instilled by his father with a belief that he was inherently lesser than his siblings, which would lead to extreme self-worth and mental health issues.

At the start of Season 1, the Hargreeves children have gone their separate ways, divided by the death of their brother, Ben. with Viktor living a quiet life, soft-spoken, focusing on his violin. The Hargreeves are brought together by the death of their father, and the sudden reappearance of Number 5, who had disappeared about a decade ago. Meanwhile, Viktor meets a man named Leonard, who is suspiciously kind to him. Despite his sibling’s’ suspicions, they get together, but they soon find proof that Leonard was preying on his self-worth issues so that he could turn him against his siblings. Viktor kills Leonard upon finding out, completely losing control over his powers as a result, just as Reginald feared. Seconds before his siblings calm him down, he fires a laser from his chest straight into the moon, causing a hail of moon rock that would destroy the Earth in mere minutes. Seconds before they’re crushed by a massive chunk of debris, Number 5 sends them all back in time, to a time decades before any of this even happened.

We find the Hargreeves siblings separated again in Season 2, this time scattered through different times early 60’s Dallas. Viktor, now suffering from amnesia, finds his way to a farm owned by a small family, Sissy, Carl, and their son Harlan, who has a mental developmental disorder. Viktor later saves Harlan, seconds away from drowning in a pond on the farm, by invoking his powers, inadvertently sharing a fraction of his powers with Harlan. As Viktor builds a relationship with Sissy, unhappy with her loveless and unhealthy marriage, they fall in love, and plan to run away together. When Carl finds out about their affair, reacting by threatening to put Harlan in an institution, they finally make an attempt, taking Harlan with them. Along the way, they’re caught by two police officers, one of which is Carl’s brother, and when Viktor uses his powers against the officers he is knocked unconscious by a gunshot. As Viktor is taken to the FBI headquarters, Carl begins to drag Harlan to his car to go through with his threat. Sissy , tired of his emotional abuse, threatens him with a rifle. Carl snatches the rifle, accidentally firing it directly at Harlan, who involuntarily deflects the bullet back towards his father, killing him.

After being tortured and accused of being a Russian spy by FBI agents, Viktor returns to Sissy and Harlan. He attempts to drain the power in Harlan that he unwittingly gave him, and then finds Sissy in the boy’s bedroom. Viktor urges Sissy to come back with him to 2019, along with Harlan, now that Five has found a way to bring them all back to their original timeline. Despite loving him, she knows that going with Viktor will put Harlan in danger, and declines.

After a massive gunfight with the entirety of the Commission, the Hargreeves siblings jump forward in time, back to their home time. But all is not as they expected, due to their actions in the 60’s. In the final seconds, we see an entirely different team of Hargreeves siblings, including Ben, alive once again: the Sparrows.

Season 3 starts right off from where Season 2 ended. After the Sparrows (the new, twisted Hargreeves family that exists in this new timeline) wipe the floor with the Umbrellas (our original team of Hargreeves siblings), Viktor swiftly ends the battle with his powers. The Umbrellas flee, and end up staying, for the time being, at the nearby Obsidian Hotel. As Viktor take a walk through the now alien city, he reflects on his conversations with Sissy. She helped him find himself, and now there’s no going back. As he reminisces on her words: “you don’t even notice the box that you’re in until someone comes along”, he heads into the nearest barbershop, grinning as he takes a seat in the barber’s chair.

Next we see Viktor, he casually mentions in a conversation with his siblings that he goes by Viktor now. He says “It’s who I’ve always been. Is that an issue with anyone? After taking a moment to process, Diego responds with a casual “Nah, I’m good with it”, and Klaus seconds it! Five, responds in his normal casual way, simply saying “truly happy for you, Viktor”, before returning to the conversation at hand.

In a scene later with Allison, Allison says that she “feels like such an a**hole” for not noticing, to which Viktor says, “You couldn’t have known cause I didn’t fully. Being with Sissy, she opened something in me, showed me I’d never be free hiding from who I really am. After losing her I realised, I can’t live in that box anymore. I won’t.” Upon staring at his reflection in a window, Viktor laments, “You know, I always hated mirrors. I thought everybody felt so strange in their skin. I guess that’s not true?” But now, he says, when he looks at his reflection, he sees himself, and just himself. Before the scene ends, Allison hugs him, and reminds him that “You’re family, Viktor, and there’s nothing that would make me love you less.”

The last sibling to learn about Viktor’s transition is Luther, when Diego corrects him on Viktor’s name and let’s him know the news. Being the big, loving softie that he is, he insists on the spot on throwing Viktor a whole party to celebrate, while Diego wants not to make a big deal out of it, as not to embarrass Viktor. Later Diego mentions it to him, saying “Luther wants to throne you a big, stupid party so you feel loved. Do you feel loved?” Viktor says yes, and, despite Diego’s closed off, snarky manner, Diego says, genuinely, “Good. You are.” Luther also asks Viktor to be the best man at his wedding with Sloane, one of the Sparrows. 🙂

While all this has been happening, reality has been tearing itself apart as fallout of the Umbrellas, who were never born in this new timeline, existing in this new timeline that they created, which means that they would have to exist to cause the changes that created this timeline, but– and so on and so on. This is all centered on a crazy ball of lightning called a Kugelblitz, which is disintegrating everything in the universe, at random. Right before the last bit of the universe is destroyed, the remaining Hargreeves children, along with this timeline’s version of Reginald Hargreeves, go through a strange door in an Obsidian Hotel suite, taking them to an identical copy of the hotel. From there they can, according to Reginald, essentially reset the universe. Though they do succeed, Reginald gets to mold the universe how he sees fit, with the Hargreeves children only able to helplessly watch. The original Hargreeves siblings suddenly appear in a new universe, along with Lila and Sparrow Ben. As they all go their separate ways, the camera pans out to show that, in this new universe, Reginald seems to own the city.

Notes:

  • The person that wrote the original Umbrella Academy comic series, Gerard Way, was also the main singer of My Chemical Romance!
  • Yeah, I know a lot of context is missing from the story section on this post, but the plot of the Umbrella Academy is EXTREMELY complicated and I think WordPress would crash if I typed out the entire thing. And more importantly that’s too much work, so yeah I just focused on Viktor’s storyline and his trans journey -Sylvie <3

Song Transmasc

This Is Home by Cavetown

Description:

This Is Home is a transmasc anthem, with the lines “I’ll cut my hair, to make you stare, I’ll hide my chest”. There’s also a part that represents someone else talking about him, which is in some ways exactly what a transmasc person both would and wouldn’t want to hear (“Get a load of this trainwreck, his hair’s a mess and he doesn’t know who he is yet, but little do we know the stars welcome him with open arms”). It’s also important to note that this was recorded before Cavetown transitioned, which makes the song representative even for pre-t transmascs.

Song links:

Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, YouTube Music, Amazon

Full song lyrics:

Often I am upset
that I cannot fall in love but I guess
this avoids the stress of falling out of it

Are you tired of me yet?
I’m a little sick right now but I swear,
when I’m ready I will fly us out of here

I’ll cut my hair
to make you stare
I’ll hide my chest, and I’ll
figure out a way to get us out of here

Turn off your porcelain face
I can’t really think right now and this place
has too many colors,
enough to drive all of us insane

Are you dead?
Sometimes I think I’m dead
cause I can feel ghosts and ghouls wrapping my head
but I don’t wanna fall asleep just yet

My eyes went dark
I don’t know where
my pupils are, but I’ll
figure out a way to get us out of here

Get a load of this monster
He doesn’t know how to communicate
His mind is in a different place
Will everybody please give him a little bit of space?
Get a load of this trainwreck
His hair’s a mess and he doesn’t know who he is yet
but little do we know, the stars
welcome him with open arms

Time is
slowly
tracing his face,
but strangely he feels at home in this place

BIPOC Character Novel Transfem

Sister

Image used with permission from original artist, Uzuri Art

Sister is an openly transfem clone trooper who is accepted by her fellow clones and her Jedi generals. She was worried for her safety because of her trans-ness, unsure if she would be considered a “defective” clone, and killed because of it, a fear that many of us trans people know all too well. Due to the man she and all the other clones were cloned from being of Māori descent, Jango Fett played by Temuera Morrison, she is also Māori representation.

More Info:

  • Pronouns/Gender: she/her, transfem
  • Media Appearance: Minor character from the novel Star Wars: Queen’s Hope by author E. K. Johnson

Appearance:

As a clone trooper, Sister has a face, tan skin color, and hair color identical to that of the original DNA donor, Jango Fett, played by Māori actor Temuera Morrison. In Uzuri Art’s commissioned drawing of Sister, she is depicted with long, dark-brown braids, and armor decorated with the pink and blue of the transgender flag.

Story (SPOILERS!!!):

Sister was created on the planet Kamino as one of millions of clones of the bounty hunter Jango Fett, intended to become soldiers for the Galactic Republic. Sister later developed a sense of femininity that was unusual among her brothers. Though this was otherwise unheard of, her brothers, upon learning of her identity, showed their support by giving her her nickname, “Sister”, as a way to reenforce that she is loved and supported. Upon the beginning of the Clone Wars, a civil war between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the clones’ purpose was realized, and they were deployed as the Grand Army of the Republic.

Sister was once again fearful of not being supported, this time by her Jedi generals, her leaders soon proved themselves to be just as open-minded as her brothers. Sister in a battle at some point fought as a member of the 7th Sky Corps under leadership of Clone Commander Cody and Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. Following the battle, Sister made a makeshift memorial under a tree, in memory of her brothers who died during the battle. While rendezvousing with General Kenobi, Sister later had a conversation with General Skywalker about gender, where Skywalker likened Sister’s transition to the Jedi’s belief in rising above conventions.

Soon after, Sister was deployed to the planet Langston with General Skywalker and the 302nd Battalion on an aid mission.

Notes:

This is one of my favorite characters ever!!!!!! This is such a cool idea to me; one transgender sister among hundreds of thousands of genetically identical brothers, it’s so unique and creative!! Plus, I’ve loved Star Wars since forever and I think I’d go feral if Sister showed up in a show or movie.

Shela Sexton, “Escapade”

Shela is a Mutant from Marvel Comics with the power to switch physical places or situations with someone. She also has repulsors in her gloves and boots that allow her to fly, goggles equipped with a heads-up display, glitter bombs that can damage technology, and dice that can disrupt gravity.

Story (SPOILERS!!!)

Shela’s mutant power was first manifested when she accidentally switched places with her school’s principal in the 9th grade. Though her parents supported her when she told them that she’s a mutant, they kicked her out of the house when she came out as trans.

At age 18, Shela moved in with her transmasc friend Morgan Red, who’d been her best friend since the 5th grade, and Morgan’s genetically engineered flying turtle (advfhffhfhfdchh Marvel Comics are so fun). They joined a support group called Super Trans, a support group specifically for transgender mutants, which also included Aphelion, Good Arson, Pity Girl, and other young transgender mutants (some of which might get posts on this site someday?).

Shela eventually began using her powers to steal from corrupt politicians, with Morgan as her man in the chair. Shela at one point ran into Emma Frost and Destiny, who showed her a vision of a future where she accidentally causes Morgan’s death. Emma offered to help train Shela, but she refused. Shela soon learned of something called an the Onyx Needle, which could possibly prevent this grim future. Shela tried to find the Needle with telling Morgan, trying to avoid telling him about the vision, but was eventually forced to when this began to damage their friendship. Soon after, Shela agreed to train with Emma Frost.

Shela, along with Morgan and several other mutants, was later kidnapped by the U-Men, a group of humans obsessed with becoming mutants through genetic modification and surgery. Shela fell off the roof of the U-Men’s complex, but chose not to switch physical spaces with Morgan, ready to accept death if it meant her friend could go on. However, this wasn’t her time, as Leo Eng was able to use his telekinesis to stop her midair, allowing Wolfsbane to catch her. Shela and Morgan were now both safe, proving Destiny’s vision wrong.

They’re also played by a non-binary actor, Avi Roque, and their younger self acted by also the non-binary Blu del Barrio! Raine is the head of the bard coven, an adorably shy character that, despite their anxieties, is always brave and true to themself. Raine first appears in Season 2, and quickly becomes a lovable and plot-integral character.

More Info:

  • Nicknames: Rainestorm (Eda Clawthorne), Sprout (Terra Snapdragon), rainey.day (Penstagram social media)
  • Pronouns/Gender: they/them, non-binary
  • Media Appearances: Supporting protagonist in animated TV show, The Owl House

Story (SPOILERS)!!

In their youth, Raine was a student of a magic school called St. Epiderm, studying as a Bard student, a type of witch that utilizes music and song as a source of magical power. Raine was at the top of their class, and participated in a program for gifted witches, Instructing Future Witches Of Tomorrow, or IFWOT, though they personally found the event boring. Their third IFWOT would be their most important, as that was when they met their lifelong friend, Edalyn Clawthorne. They quickly became friends, and got through the IFWOT’s challenges as a team of two. After this, Raine transferred to Eda’s school, Hexside School of Magic and Demonics, and eventually got into a romantic relationship with her. This relationship was eventually reluctantly ended by Raine, though the feelings were still there, bothered by her emotionally closed off nature and poor communication skills. It was around the time of the breakup that Raine officially committed to the Bard Coven.

Raine became a teacher for their Coven, which highlighted for them the issues in Emperor Belos’ Coven system, coming to the conclusion that the way witches are forced to choose a specific Coven is wrong. This system revolves around categorizing every witch under a specific Coven, each specializing in a specific type of magic, and preventing them from using all other types through implementation of seals on their wrists. Inspired to make a change, Raine slowly climbed through the ranks, eventually becoming the head of the entire Bard Coven, the highest rank in Belos’ Coven system, and formed a rebel group with other like minded Bards unhappy with it. This group would be called Bards Against the Throne, abbreviated to the “BATs” for a little appropriately theatrical effect, a group dedicated to helping witches avoid their magic being limited with a Sigil . During missions for their rebellion, Raine and the other members wore bat masks to disguise their identities. Raine’s distrust toward the Emperor grew when they, along with all the other Coven Heads, was granted a vision of the Day of Unity, an event run by Belos that would ultimately result in the extermination of every witch marked with a Sigil.

Raine first appears in Season 2, during a mission, where the BATs save a wild witch (witch not limited by a Sigil) from two of Belos’ thugs, but get in over their heads when backup arrives. Eda helps them escape, leading to them officially joining the group. After assisting in raid, Eda hangs out with Raine, like they always used to. When Eda asks Raine how they managed to become Head Witch of the bards, despite their crippling stage fright, Raine simply and confidently says “I’m just that good”. Summoning a lute for Eda, they ask her if she remembers any of the bard magic that they taught her. Upon attempting to play an old song she wrote for Raine, “Raine’s Rhapsody”, they find that, due to Eda’s curse, the magic spreads around her and begins to destroy their surroundings.

They get a tip on another raid the next day, however, this pans out to be a trap set by the Coven heads of the Abomination and Beast Keeping Covens, and three of the BATs are immediately captured. Raine and Eda quickly create a plan to make the best out of this bad situation, seeing an opportunity to take the two Coven Heads out of the picture, preventing the Day of Unity, as it requires all nine Coven Heads for the ritual to function properly. Willing to sacrifice themselves to ruin Belos’ planned genocide, Raine and Eda play a duet, weaponizing Eda’s curse as it rapidly kills their surroundings, but a photo of Luz and King falls out of Eda’s hair, distracting Raine enough to stop their playing, shocked, as they ask Eda if she has kids. In this moment of hesitation, the two opposing Head Witches capture Raine and Eda.

Rather than killing Raine, worried that they won’t have time to find a replacement Head Witch before the Day of Unity, Raine is brainwashed by Terra Snapdragon, head of the Plant Coven, using a special tea. This brainwashing, however, is unsuccessful, as Raine has been using their bard magic to secretly undermine the concoction’s effects, as they pretend to be getting headaches as a result of the brainwashing. Unaffected, Raine continues to work towards undermining Belos’ plans. Raine is assigned to a parade celebrating the Coven system, Coven Day, where they are captured by Eda, but pretend not to remember the BATs, not wanting to entangle Eda in their plans, trying to protect her. As Coven scouts begin to close in on them, Raine finally reveals their true plan, and helps Eda escape by casting an invisibility spell on her. Darius Deamonne, Head of the Abomination Coven, and Eberwolf, Head of the Beast Coven, eventually begin to conspire with Raine, joining their cause. Darius informs Raine about the Draining Spell, the true purpose of the Day of Unity, which will drain the life force of every witch marked with a Sigil. Darius’s plan to prevent the spell, however includes Eda, so Raine disapproves of it, still hesitant to get Eda involved. A week before the event, the three attempt to cast a complicated spell that would allow them to enter the Emperor’s twisted mind, but this is thwarted by Hunter, and he and Luz Noceda are sent into his mind instead. The three then work with Eda and King, and successfully pull the two teenagers out of Belos’ mind.

Mere hours before the Day of Unity, Raine accidentally reveals to Eda that they remember her, on a crystal ball call with some Coven Scouts. Eda begs them to protect Luz and King when the Day of Unity arrives, but Luz and Eda are captured by Terra Snapdragon. The two are quickly rescued by Raine’s group (now called the CATs, standing for Coven heads Against the Throne), which now includes Steve, Darius, Eberwolf, Hooty, and Lilith, who have a last ditch scheme to interrupt the Draining Spell. By branding her with a Sigil, they can disguise Eda as Raine, and allow her curse to disrupt the Draining Spell. This plan, however quickly fails, with Belos expecting it, and Raine is put in place for the spell nonetheless. As Eda is being killed by her her curse, Raine, as they are rapidly drained of their vitality, tears off Eda’s disintegrating arm, saving her life. The Draining Spell is halted suddenly when King summons the Collector.

This is where we find Raine at the start of the show’s third and final season. Raine wakes up next to Eda, immediately who flies up to combat the Collector. her curse stops her midflight, however, and she is imprisoned in the Collector’s Archive house. Raine and the other Coven Heads, powerless against the Collector, are transformed into puppets by the Collector, and tasked with guarding Eda, should she attempt to escape. While in captivity, Eda would leave her cell to visit Raine’s lifeless, puppeted form. After a time jump, we see Odalia Blight, who has been forced into a maid-like position in the Archive House by the Collector, casting a spell on Raine’s puppet form to get them to help her with her daily tasks. Soon after, they’re possessed by Emperor Belos, who uses Raine’s body as a means to manipulate the Collector. Upon learning that the Titan is in fact still alive and quite powerful, Belos sneaks off to the castle, planning to possess the Titan itself, the massive creature who’s carcass makes up the entire island. Raine temporarily breaks free, but is ultimately unable to bar Belos from reaching the throne room and assimilating himself with the heart of the Titan. Raine is pinned to the wall, only able to watch as Belos’ infection expands to cover the entire island. Luz, in her half-titan form, later releases Raine, and they, along with Eda and King, fend off Belos long enough for Luz to tear Belos out from the heart, breaking off his connection to the Titan. After Belos attempts to gaslight gatekeep but absolutely not girlboss one last time, trying to convince Luz that he only attempted a fun little genocide under the control of a curse that he is now free of, Luz watches the acid rain slowly melt him away, while Raine and the other two curbstomp that evil goopy little fascist until he is no more. The castle collapsed, and Belos finally gone, they return to the Owl House, where Eda puts the exhausted Raine in a little handmade nest, where he finally gets some much-needed rest.

Four years later, in a world without Belos’ oppression, Raine becomes a teacher at Eda’s new school dedicated to teaching wild magic, the University of Wild Magic, and work with Alador Blight to invent a method of removing Coven Sigils, which eventually succeeds. In the final scene of the show, Raine is there with the rest of the cast at Luz’s quinceañera.

Notes (kind-of spoiler):

  • In The Owl House, most witches are paired with a Palisman, small, sentient wooden creatures that both act as companions and can morph into a staff that can be used to fly or perform spells. It was commonly speculated by fans that Raine didn’t have a Palisman, just like the other Coven Heads or members of the Emperor’s Coven, as this was forbidden, and any Palismans were consumed by Belos upon being seized by the Emperor’s Coven. However, Raine is commonly shown with an ornate viola, with a fox design at the scroll of the instrument, which they seem to summon out of seemingly nowhere. In the final episode, Raine is at one point shown holding a staff with a fox at the head, extremely similar to the way Palismans appear in staff form. It seems as if the writers meant to imply that Raine’s viola has been their Palisman the whole time, which they kept disguised as a viola all this time to prevent it’s seizing and eventual consumption by Belos.

Omori

(Concept art of Omori as a girl by OMOCAT)

Omori can become a girl in the Hikkikomori Route of the game. However, all it does is give his sprite pigtails and allows the player to enter the girls’ restroom at Last Resort.

Omori is one of the central characters of OMORI, a psychological horror RPG that allows the player to explore two separate worlds and ultimately pick one of the two realities.

More info:

  • Other names: Sunny
  • Pronouns/gender: he/him, cis male (transfem if you go through with certain actions. It doesn’t change the story, though.)
  • Media Appearances: Main character of one of OMORI‘s two worlds

Story (SPOILERS!!!!):

Omori is the first character the player sees, and plays as. For the majority of the game, he’s the protagonist of Headspace. Headspace is a world that exists solely inside of the mind of Sunny, the protagonist of the real world, and who the game truly centers around. Omori resembles 12-year-old Sunny, and is the only black and white character in a world of color.

To tell his whole story as a character would take an unimaginable amount of time, so instead we’ll give a summary. As stated above, this does contain major spoilers. If you haven’t experienced the game yet and are intrigued, we encourage you to stop reading and experience the game first by playing it or watching this walkthrough.

Omori lives in White Space, which is a fairly simple place. There’s a laptop, tissue box, notebook, cat, and door. Through most of the game, the laptop shows a game of Hangman. To guess letters, the player has to collect the letter keys scattered throughout Headspace. Omori and his friends go on many adventures throughout the game, mostly in an attempt to find their friend, Basil, that goes missing at the beginning of the game. During battles, Omori “does not succumb” once per battle if he’s supposed to be defeated and stays in at 1 HP. Omori alone finds Basil multiple times, but always ends up back in White Space. Once the hangman puzzle is solved, a new area of Headspace is unlocked: Black Space.

It’s even simpler at the surface, with only a picnic basket used to save the game, another tissue box, and doors scattered all over the place. Each door leads into different rooms, a few of which with Basil in them. In every room where Omori finds Basil, Basil ends up dead, sometimes cut off as he’s about to say something. In one of the rooms, Omori is given a Black Space version of Basil’s photo album, and picks up the photos from around the room. They’re out of order, but once placed in the photo album, they tell a story that Omori has been trying to repress for Sunny for four years: Sunny accidentally killed his older sister, Mari, and no one but Basil knows about it. Basil had the idea of hanging her in a tree to frame it as a suicide so that the two of them wouldn’t get in trouble.

Toward the end of the true route, Omori becomes the final boss battle. He becomes a manifestation of Sunny’s deepest, darkest thoughts. He encourages Sunny to end his life, saying that he’s less than worthless and there’s no way he’d be forgiven if he were to admit what he’s done. Instead of the familiar “Omori did not succumb” message, the player sees the message “Omori will not succumb” instead, and cannot defeat Omori. Instead, they are slowly beaten down by Omori until they’re defeated. Then, Sunny comes back and plays a duet with Headspace Mari, one that they argued about and just before Mari’s accidental death. Omori fades after the performance, and Sunny wakes up.

Completely changing the vibe of this post, Omori can become a girl in the Hikkikomori Route. The Hikkikomori Route starts when Sunny refuses to open the front door and go outside, therefore choosing Headspace as his reality. The player spends a lot more time in Headspace playing as Omori because of this, and if the player helps Medusa during their second visit to Humphrey, she gives a mystery potion that transes Omori’s gender.
